Conferences held in 2002 - 2006 generated great interest in Ukraine and abroad. About 200 native and foreign participants took part in each of them including 30 attendees from Europe and the USA. It is expected that 2008 will be a favourable year for wide introduction of bioenergy technologies in Ukraine. Development of bioenergy is an urgent issue now. Since the time of the last conference (2006), price of natural gas grew nearly twice in Ukraine, and the tendency continues. Biomass is the main renewable energy source in Ukraine which can replace consumption of expensive fossil fuels. Its energy potential amounts to about 17 mtoe/yr that is more than 10% of the total primary energy consumption in Ukraine. Besides, introduction of biomass-to-energy technologies significantly contributes to mitigation of global greenhouse effect. In 2008, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine celebrates its 90th anniversary. The Academy always has been on the front line of science and solved the most important problems. Last 10 years close attention has been devoted to bioenergy development as it is a direct way to strengthening energy security of the country. Dr. Flotats, director of GIRO CT, is participating in this congress,  sponsored by OECD’s Co-operative Research Programme: Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems (www.oecd.org/agr/prog). It addresses the objectives of both Theme 1, The Natural Resources Challenge, and Theme 2, Agricultural Sustainability in Practice. This workshop will focus on the current state of scientific information on advanced treatment of animal waste. This information can be applied strategically towards enhancing livestock systems for both the sustainable use and protection of natural resources, and sustainable production. These two themes represent two critical areas in world-wide agriculture and need interaction of a wide range of disciplines. For this reason, an impressive group of world experts has been put together including microbiologists, soil, water and air scientists, engineers, veterinary medicine, biologists, chemists, environmentalists, animal production, and system specialists to discuss and provide direction on waste treatment systems of the future. Challenges include atmospheric emissions, excessive nutrients, pathogens, odors, and affordability of treatment. This workshop will take a synergistic approach towards developing more effective animal waste treatment practices and holistic systems to solve these problems.
